What you can do now
-Write down at least five goals you have for your education and your life. Then, break each goal into sub-goals that will help you achieve it. It may seem like a lot of work, but it’s worth it: Taking time now to think through your big picture can help keep you motivated throughout college and make sure you wind up with a degree that fulfills all of your career goals.
– A letter of recommendation written by a faculty member. – Official transcripts from all high schools, colleges, and universities attended. – Copies of SAT/ACT results (if applicable). – Personal essay(s) demonstrating your leadership abilities and extracurricular involvement.
Don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t work out at first
You may have heard stories of people winning scholarships or emerging as top performers right off the bat. It’s great that these stories exist, but know that everyone starts somewhere. If you don’t win your first essay contest, it doesn’t mean your essays are never going to garner awards—just make note of what you can improve and work on those areas for future contests!
Don’t wait till the last minute
To guarantee you’ll have time to complete all that pesky paperwork, apply early! Many universities require you to submit application forms by January or even December. In addition, financial aid is often based on need and availability of funds—apply too late and your chances of getting some help dwindle greatly. Also make sure your transcripts are up-to-date; missing marks on transcripts can be cause for denial. And lastly: make sure your essay is award-winning!
Have a backup plan
You’ve already heard that you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket, and that’s especially true for your career. Have a backup plan – or three. The world is changing, and it seems that there are new opportunities coming up every day. Keep your eye on these trends so you can be prepared to seize them when they come around. With a solid backup plan, even if one idea doesn’t pan out, another opportunity will take its place almost instantly.
