How to write a good Personal Statement

A personal statement is your chance to get your voice heard. If you are going up against a very high number of other applicants, you need something that will make yours stand out from the rest. These 10 tips should help you achieve that!

  1. Proofread. Your spelling mistakes can be interpreted as laziness or lack of care – neither of which go down well with tutors
  2. Do not assume anything in the Personal Statement is obvious – it’s worth reminding yourself how many students apply every year who have never been to Oxford before so they’re just as in the dark about what they might do there as you are!
  3. Be personable and show off your personality – if you sound like everybody else then why would Oxford want you?
  4. Avoid vague statements like I want to study law because I want to work in human rights. Why do you want this? Is it because it has always been your passion or is it because there’s lots of job opportunities? The latter is more likely to persuade an admissions tutor!
  5. Show some evidence of commitment – don’t forget that Oxford is not going to be a walk in the park.
  6. Consider what you will gain from studying at Oxford – it’s not all about getting a good degree.
  7. Explain why you think that university education in this subject would benefit you more than any other course and
  8. Summarize by telling them your most important achievement.
  9. And finally, proofread again (or ask someone else)! Personal Statement Tips

There is no fixed amount of words but be sure to cover the topic thoroughly in around 500 words or less. The interview will take place either over Skype or video call before the start of term at Oxford.

What are requirements?

To be eligible for Oxford University Scholarships, applicants must have applied and been admitted to study at Oxford University as full-time undergraduates in any discipline, including Engineering Science. This award is tenable in any of the Colleges at Oxford except Corpus Christi College. Scholarship recipients will not be required to take out a loan or obtain sponsorship from other sources to cover the cost of tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses or other costs incurred in connection with their studies.

Sample Letters of Recommendation

It takes a lot of work, but finding someone qualified to write your letter of recommendation can be one of the most challenging aspects of applying for an Oxford scholarship. Below are some quick tips on how to ask friends, family members, professors, mentors, supervisors and people you look up to in your field (e.g., actors) if they would consider writing your letter. Be respectful and try not to take it personally if they say no!

Take time setting up the meeting. Be respectful of their time as this should not be a short meeting – an hour or two is ideal. Let them know what you are asking them before the conversation so that they have some idea as far as expectations go. Remember, they don’t need to agree right away; let them think about it. Once they do agree, make sure that you provide any relevant information they may need such as dates when the letter will be due or specific instructions from the school such as A standard-length essay. If you are unable to speak with them face-to-face, there are online services like Paperless Post where recipients can send back a PDF with their signature.
